Astra Gets the Chance to Demonstrate Her New Weapon

Astra smiled inwardly. That would almost be sufficient reason for
marrying Fred. Astra and her mother did not get on, and Astra was always
happy to provoke her. She knew that her mother expected her to marry
no-one less than a prince. But she couldn't marry Fred just to spite her
mother. She liked him a lot (for all that she had just been teasing him),
but she certainly did not love him - yet, at any rate.
As she thought things over, they continued down the passageway. At the end of it was a door, which turned out to be locked. "Now I can show you what this thing can do," Astra said, brandishing her raygun. She aimed it at the door, at a point a short distance away from the lock, and then depressed the stud for about five seconds. As she had hoped, she burnt a large enough hole for her to be able to put her hand through it.
