Fred, Astra, and Velus exit the portal onto a hill overlooking the road
below. The sky is solid gray, and the air is still. It is chilly, and the
ground is barren except for some dismal looking shrubs and the obelisks
towering above the road below. There is no noise, other than an odd buzzing
sound every now and then, and the peals of distant thunder. Fred shakes his head slowly, as if waking up. "Wha... did we just... come through a portal into a barren landscape from a prison cell after hardly even discussing it, all because a ghostly mage fixed Velus and promised us vague rewards (and escape from prison)?" Astra nods, an irritated look on her face. "Well, it can't be any worse than other things I have gotten myself into, and I am always up for an adventure, so lets try to put a good face on it. I say we head for that road." Velus finds himself clothed as he exits the portal, and points out to Astra that she is also simply clothed in brown traveling robes. "This must be a gift from our friend back there in the cell." "Friend... heh. That has yet to be seen" sneers Astra, and they head on down towards the road. Fred holds back briefly, but then follows, positing a question as he goes. "Now, I remember choosing to come here, but I honestly don't think that it was a good choice. That guy creeped me out, something about him was not right. We should..." but then Astra interrupts him, spinning around in her tracks. "We should what, Fred? Do you have the means of producing a portal? Do you want to sit here and wait for whatever lurks out in these wastes to come eat us, or do you want to go to that town and get more information?" Fred tries to speak again "Clearly we should go to the town, I am just saying that I think we..." but Astra interrupts once more. "Yes, fine, we were probably enchanted or befuddled or whatever, but don't tell me it has never happened to you before. Now, we suck it up and deal with it. And if we are able to do this damn fool mission, we might get our reward, who knows." At this point Fred just shuts up and keeps walking, Astra nods at him sharply and starts moving forward once more. They are almost at the road when Velus speaks up "You two should really stop acting like an old married couple, this is going to be a long adventure and painful if you can't get along. Seriously." They finally reach the obelisks, tall (about fifteen feet high) smooth stone, black as obsidian, with a smooth purplish black orb floating (!!) above the top. Chiseled in the base about eye level are Dwarven runes. Also the word 'Xathiya' is chiseled beneath in the common tongue.
