Nendi wondered what could have happened to the duellists whom she had
seen in the tapestry. After all, it was curiosity about them that had
drawn her here in the first place. She had formed a hypothesis that the
duellist wearing the leather skirt must be one of the local women. After
all, they seemed to wear leather, although admittedly they did not go
topless or shoeless. She also guessed that the male soldiers that she had
seen were members of an occupying army. How else to explain the looks of
hatred that so many of the women gave them? She wondered if the minority
of better dressed women might be soldiers' wives or perhaps were just
collaborators. She realised that she had not registered whether they had
given the soldiers the same looks of hatred as had most of the leather-
clad women.
On an impulse, she approached the two women who had caught her eye and said: "Excuse me, but I imagine from your similarity that you must be sisters. You don't have two more sisters, but with red hair and a little paler skinned than you, who are about to fight a duel, by any chance?"
