Nendi felt the world around her change, as the noises of the nearby jungle were replaced by the
noises of a loud and bustling city. This was not a place of magic like the one the girl and the
unicorn had dwelled in. This was still the real world, and the place she was now was much like
the
one she had left. In fact, judging from the stifling humidity and the jungles in the distance, she
might not have been very far from the place she'd left. But the buildings were very different from
the ones she'd glimpsed from the windows of the palace in Themiscyra. They were short and
made of rough brick. The language she heard people speaking sounded quite different from that
she'd heard earlier, as well, though she instinctively understood it. She could only catch
snatches of their conversation, but from the stray phrases she understood it seemed that many
of them were talking about some religious festival that was coming soon, and looking reverently
at hte tallest building in the city. It was not a square hut like the others, but a curved building
with carvings inlaid in the walls. Outside it she could see twostylized statues of fierce-looking
women holding spears.
There was another building that rivaled the brick temple in height. It was square and orderly and had no walls, with columns made of marble holding up a pointed roof, and inside was a majestic statue of a naked man. It clearly was not built by the same people who built this city, and many of the people of this city, especially the women were looking at it with hatred. The women were, as in Themiscyra, tall and well-built and muscular, although everyone here seemed a bit shorter than Nendi. Most of them were wearing rough leather clothes, but here and there she saw a few women dressed in cloth and wearing jewelry. But there were also soldiers stationed around the city, all of them dressed in bronze armor, all of them men. They were a little bit lighter-skinned than the other people of this city and different in their features. The women were glaring at them with the same hatred as the temple. Nendi was somewhat surprised that none of the people had noticed her. Why weren't they shocked at the appearance of a stunningly beautiful redhead, taller than most of the people in this city, wearing only a bikini? Maybe they thought she had always been here, and she'd been "woven" into the "fabric" of this place. Then she heard a juddering, roaring noise comign from somewhere above her. She looked up in the sky and saw a large, boxy thing made of wood and bronze. On its sides were two square metal boxes that were spewing forth mephitic black smoke. It was an airship. No one living in the time she had been born, save perhaps for immortals like Zerm, had ever seen such an airship. But she had picked up legends of airships that soared the skies in the time of the Great Empire, hundreds of years ago. They had been sleek and powerful ships, not like this awkward and ugly thing. But it was an airship, and there were no airships in the known lands anymore. That was when she realized that somehow she'd been sent to the past. Then she saw two young women walking towards the brick temple, wearing leather. Unlike the others, they were as tall as Nendi. They didn't look quite like the ones in the tapestry, who had red hair like so many of the Aqualarian royal family in later ages. They were a bit darker- skinned and had brown hair. But their beautiful and athletic bodies and confident bearing, they had to be the same women. They were not identical, but alike enough to be sisters.
