Stacy is Hurt

Susan's mother gave her a glare that could have melted Antarctica. "But nothing," she said coldly. "You are an uncaring, ingrateful person, and you are not going in there and upsetting my daughter!"

Stacy felt about ready to burst into tears, and she wasn't sure whether it was because of the hateful -- and possibly true? -- things the woman had said to her, or merely frustration at being kept away from Susan and whatever information she might have. And not knowing that just made her feel worse. She was still trying to think of something to say in reply when:

1. Melanie came over and laid a calming hand on the woman's arm. "Stacy does care, really. Please, just let her go in and see Susan. She came all this way."
2. The nurse from the desk came up and said "I'm sorry, Ma'am, but I'm going to have to ask you to leave."
