"I'm sorry," said Stacy, not knowing what else to say. "Just waltzing off to New York like that, as soon as you got your hands on that money, and never even phoning Susan once you got there. You never let her know your address or phone number. You didn't even send a card at Christmas. And you know she looked on you almost as an elder sister rather than just her boss." Stacy wondered if she had really been such an uncaring character as she was being portrayed. "I'm sorry," she said again. "I meant to get in touch, but..." She let the sentence trail off, not being able to think of a satisfactory reason.

Susan's mother responded:

  1. "Well, I suppose that's all water under the bridge now, and I'm sure Susan will want to see you. I'd better go in first and warn her, though, as it might be a bit of a shock for her."
  2. "I don't want you coming near my daughter. Do you hear me?"
