The snow gently floated down and coated the forest with white. She felt the warmth drain from
her skin and the cold creep into her bones. She fell to the floor of the forest and lay sprawled.
"Come back!" said the maiden, sniffling. "Please come back! It's so lonely here." And Nendi felt
that loneliness within her, slicing into her like a knife, like the cold. Just as she remembered
feeling the animal lusts of Sir Robert when she had first come into being. She was formed to
serve the desires of others and she felt them as if they were her own: this was a piece of self
knowledge that came into her mind with no prompting, just as did the knowledge of what she
looked like.
But she had always fought back against the desires of Robert and even though she felt an odd sort of sympathy for the maiden who had known no other until today, Nendi simply answered, "no." And all the strange and primal magic that had formed her flew into that word. And the word became a wind, and the wind passed through the forest and the trees grew green again and the thousand terrible things that hid in the shadows of the forest trembled. And the white snow became a cloud of white doves that took up Nendi and carried her into another space as the maiden cried. "I'm sorry," she whispered. The power that had filled her in that place of strange magic was gone now. Nendi found herself:
