Nendi did not like the way that things were developing. She had a
suspicion that the maiden might be neither as good nor as innocent as she
had at first seemed but rather - not to put too fine a point on it -
could be an immature, spoilt, possessive bitch. But if she left the girl
behind, and searched for a way out on her own, that would also mean
leaving the unicorn behind. The maiden might be bluffing about there
being dreadful things in the forest that the unicorn could protect
against, but it might be the truth.
She came to a decision. "Why should I play your game? Goodbye!" With that, she started running across the meadow, heading for the nearest point at which it gave way to the mist-shrouded forest. "Come back!" the maiden cried, but Nendi ignored her. The sky began rapidly to darken, the wind got up, and then a cold, drenching rain began to fall. This was bad news for Nendi, who still wore only a bikini. At least when she reached the trees she should be sheltered from the worst of the rain, she consoled herself.
