Stacy felt a horrible sense of panic welling up within her. Was this,
then, to be her fate as well? A blind amnesiac? What good, she wondered
bitterly, would it do never to age if you had to do it under those
circumstances? Personally, Stacy thought she would much rather the ravages
of old age. And that led her to another thought. What on Earth had
possessed her to take this experimental drug herself? She was a young
woman, still. It couldn't be simple fear of aging, surely. Even if she'd
desired a drink from some pharmacological fountain of youth, she could have
afforded to wait until it had been properly tested! These questions buzzed round and round in her brain, taking her nowhere. Only one thing was for certain. She was now up against a time limit. The rats had started their descent into blindness only weeks after their memory loss. Assuming that the same timescale would told true in a human -- an uncertain assumption, Stacy had to admit -- she had precious little time to find some way of reversing the process. Well, time limit or not, it was growing late, and there was little she could do tonight. Stacy decided to at least attempt to get a decent night's sleep.
