Stacy decided that she really ought to go and see Susan - assuming the
girl would be allowed a non-family
visitor. She might not remember the girl, but she had obviously been a
good assistant and visiting her
was the least she could do. And on a self-interested note, it wouldn't do
to get into her family's bad books if she wanted
to have ready access to the rats.
As she tried to get to sleep, Stacy found herself wondering what type of blindness the rats were developing. If the problem was cataracts, for example, then that wasn't so bad, as that condition was readily dealt with in humans. Some other causes of blindness were a different matter, though. Unfortunately, she doubted whether there was any way of telling - at any rate while the rats were alive. You couldn't ask a rat to take an eye-test. She wondered what Jimmy's reaction would be if she asked if she could kill one of the rats so that its eyes could be examined by an expert; she doubted that it would be favourable. Stacy didn't know whether Socorro had an opthalmologist, but she would have to make an appointment to see one very soon, in Albuquerque if necessary, and have her own eyes tested. Eventually Stacy managed to get to sleep. In the morning she rang Jimmy. He had had the promised phone call from his mother. There was no change in Susan's condition.
