Pieces of a Girl's Mind

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 6972

Stacy looked at the spine but no author's name was there, she looked within the cover, nothing. The artist of this particular graphic novel was one Belle Bozniack. But that name meant nothing to Stacy. She put the book down and the woman with the rings kept on blathering. Stacy began to walk out of the shop when her summer dress caught the edge of one of the book tables. A stack of books came tumbling down and to the embarrassment of Stacy everyone in the store was looking at her. That's when she heard the voice of a youngster whisper loudly to her mother, "Hey, isn't that Mistake?"

That was the last straw; before anymore strange memories, before anymore loss of memories, before anyone else could comment on the secret-agent Mistake or on her likeness to that sultry heroine, Stacy bolted from the shop and back out into the subway station.

She ran for the nearest train just wanting to leave that place, to leave the strangeness of it all, to escape the nightmare she had found herself in. As she sat on a formerly unoccupied seat she thought about her day, her time underground, and the revelations it had brought. And that's when a nausea came upon her and her mind was flooded anew by memories, recollections, images of times, places and people. She saw a meeting of the Society for Creative Anachronism, she tasted the turkey leg at the banquet at Medieval Times Restaurant, she heard the cluck of the croquet ball at Dragon Ride & Park.

~~Oh my goodness what is HAPPENING to me?!!? I am Stacy, I am Stacy, I am Stacy...what?!!! Who am I? I can see friends, but I cannot see myself. I can only see them...my friends. Yes, my friends Bob and Alice and their pet terrier; Fred McGuire dressed up like some barbarian knight on Saturday SCA-fests; Damn! He's the SOB who spiked my dos equis with his own homemade brew...he called it the Red Fred Special.~~

Indeed more memories came as if from an unseen fount. She recalled last summer's trip to Provid Beach on Lake Michigan—the whole gang was there, except for Lucy who got called down to Australia for a photo shoot. Gawd she missed Lucy! She felt lonely, she felt homesick, she felt scared. She was confusing reality with fantasy.... ~~how stupid I was to think, even for a moment, that Fred McGuire was a real knight! Oh gawd I'm crazy...I've finally gone over the deep end!~~

Stacy knew that she needed help. She needed to find out who she really was, she needed to find her home, she needed to find out why she couldn't remember these things. For the present moment all she wanted to do was rest in the seat of that subway train. She didn't even know what direction it was going or where it would lead her, but she didn't care. All she wanted to do right then was stop shaking, stop crying, stop thinking that she'd lost her mind.

Though that was important indeed, one detail she had failed to notice –and an important one at that- was the presence of an elderly man some seats behind her. He was nondescript, really, perhaps in his sixties and dressed in slacks and a white shirt. Though she did not see him, he took great notice of her; though even if she had seen him she would not remember him, he had many memories of her; though even if she did remember him, her only memory would be of his staring at her dress in the book shop, he knew much more about her. Stacy was involved in a deadly game, you see, and her memory played only one part, yet there were many other players, and whether this man who followed behind worked for the forces of good or the forces of evil, only time would tell.

  1. Under and Over that subway goes, but where it stops nobody knows....
