As Stacy's panic attack subsided, she realised that she had no idea how
she had got
from the shop to the train, somehow in the process getting onto the
platform without
having a ticket or token. Then she went back to her main
preoccupation of trying to unearth any memories that might tell her who
she was.
The subway line she was travelling on stopped being a subway and became
what one might call
a "superway", since the track was now elevated well above the ground.
Still trying to
disentangle her memories - with little success - Stacy didn't even notice.
Indeed, by the time she came
back to a full awareness of her surroundings, the train was pulling up at
Coney Island.
Stacy was feeling rather better now than she had done when she boarded the train, and Coney Island seemed like as good a place as any to spend what was a pleasant summer's afternoon. She managed to charm her way past another ticket inspector (giving a different false name and address this time), and walked from the station towards the beach. Her "shadow" followed, a discreet distance behind her in order to minimise the risk that she might notice him. As she walked, Stacy realised that she did have one lead for finding out more about herself. If she had been the model for "Mistake", then she would presumably have spent considerable time posing for the artist. During that time, they would surely have chatted, and the artist must have learnt something about Stacy. And with an unusual name like Belle Bozniack, she shouldn't be too hard to track down. As Stacy passed the amusement park, she reflected that - given her penniless state - she had two more pressing problems even than discovering who she was:
