The Lead In to the Quest Recap...

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 68721

"Some here need to be brought up to speed on certain things and I feel that you are most suited for the task!" Astra the Angel smiles . . . angelically.

Gee thanks, Elrondir grumbles, shaking his head slightly and frowning. I quirk my eyebrow slightly in silent agreement (a gesture which goes as unnoticed by most of those present here as Elrondir's mindspoken gripe).

Angel Astra smiles a bit more and shake her head slightly, amused at the silent byplay between the elf and me, well aware of what is going on both in the spoken (and unspoken) realm. 'Tis fitting if nothing else and she has the good taste of not needlessly sharing it with some of the more disagreeable ones before me and my friend.

While useful (more so than SOME from Section 2 I could mention), I find that a lot of the JSSDF tend to be more underfoot than I rather care for, thank you. Why they are this way right now I could not tell you. They are more . . . animated in their behavior than most "modern day" (20th century plus) officers I've encountered in my travels since meeting the Doctor. By most standards they display behavior that would . . . not inspire confidence in their troops and co-workers. Point in fact, I have to do so far as to say they'd have been relieved of command due to being on the nerve of nervous emotional breakdown! But, however, it seems that nobody here seems to find their behavior alarming.

Is it due to the culture (which happens to be a reflection of the apocalyptic, psycho-drama anime show know as "Neon Genesis Evangelion")? Or is it just a reflection of the fact that as Elrondir had (in private) jokingly said that nobody in that show (and this place) really has their heads screwed on correctly.

Whatever the case, it has been a trying time dealing with these people. It's their attitude. Their general condition. . . . in part.

But the sad, dark truth of the problems we have been having with this particular Quest is rather simple. We hate this place and a bear a bit of . . . ill will towards a lot of it's people in their failure towards Reika for not stepping up in helping her in her times of need. For being . . . too humanly flawed.

Yes, it's the height of hypocrisy (we aren't above human beings, even us dragons). However, it is a painful reminder how . . . people can fail. Overlook other people's problems while being wrapped up in their own affairs.

But then again so much was gained by this Quest thus far, correct? Let's not speak of this with Rei or Reika, however. Too upsetting.

I am just saying that these Evangelion types are not the only types with complicated and conflicting motivations. Just . . . not as involved and "messed up" as theirs, that's all.

"Mind if I ask exactly what you wished to discuss gentlemen?" Elrondir finally asks, pushing aside his annoyance. "What didn't our reports cover enough in detail for you? Granted, my sister's the one who usually write them up as a courtesy gesture to various foreign military organizations we encounter, but I at least can do that much."

As it turns out, after some missteps on the part of some JSSDF staffers (their copies having been delivered to their analogs instead of them) they had read everything. And as it turned out they understood what they'd read (Elrondir had refrained from slipping TOO deeply into "Rumsfeldese"), interestingly enough by the way they summarize it.

  1. It's when they get to the very END, which is both unexpected and understandable, given this messed up world they live in...
