Fighting in the Dark

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 68572

Astra took me by surprise, as I had assumed that she would still be unable to see in the near total darkness. But our talk must have given her eyes enough time to adjust. She managed to grab the knife from me before I could react. She might now be a ruler rather than a warrior, but she had evidently kept up her combat training.

As I mentioned earlier, I had a sneaking worry that I might no longer be immortal. Also no-one had ever stuck a knife in me when I was in my human form. It was possible that my immortality might operate like Astra's (she was evidently assuming that it would), in which case a wound sufficient to kill an ordinary man would leave me as if dead until the weapon was removed.

So I transformed back to my dragon form, almost filling the room. Astra evidently knew that her chances against even a mortal dragon were remote with no better weapon than a dagger at her disposal, for she decided that it would be best to deny me the use of it, tossing it through the open French window with enough force to carry it over the balcony railing.

"You're forgetting," I said. "I don't need the dagger. I can incinerate you."

"And you are forgetting that doing that would not leave a weapon in my body."

"So you would perhaps survive. But what sort of condition would you be in afterwards? Your body might totally regenerate - though the experience could still be very painful. Or you might be left with unsightly burns. Do you want to chance it?"

"What alternative do I have?"

"You could abdicate in my favour."

  1. "All right. I've been getting rather bored lately. I miss the good old days of adventuring."
  2. "Never!"
