"Rats," Melanie corrected her automatically. Then she realised just what
Stacy had
said, and her eyes narrowed. "Are you telling me that you're more worried
about a
bunch of rats than you are about Susan?" she asked. "No, of course not,"
said Stacy.
"I'd love to go with you tomorrow to see her. But, er, I'm very big on
animal welfare -
even when it's rats." "All right. I suppose that's fair enough. Well, when
you closed down
your experiment to move to New York, Susan took the rats home. She'd grown
kind of fond
of them, looked on them as pets. I don't know if anyone else in the family
would have thought to
feed them after the accident. They'd have had other things on their
minds." "Would
there be anybody at home if I went round there
this evening, do you think, just to check that somebody's been looking
after them?"
