Coma

Melanie looked at her in sympathy. "I'm sorry," she said. "I guess you two were close?" Stacy could only nod. "Do you want to see her?" Melanie asked. "They've taken her to a hospital in Albuquerque... I was thinking of driving up there tomorrow, anyway. I could give you a ride?"

Stacy pondered this for a moment. If Susan was in a coma, she could hardly get any information out of her, and was probably better off sticking with her original plan of visiting the VLA tomorrow. On the other hand, this Susan was apparently a friend of hers, even if she didn't remember, and visiting her in the hospital somehow seemed the decent thing to do.

1. "Thanks," said Stacy finally. "I'd appreciate that."
2. "No, thank you," said Stacy. "Maybe I'll visit her later."
3. "But who's feeding the lab mice?" Stacy found herself blurting out.
