"Er, no, I suppose you wouldn't," said Stacy. "From what you've told me,
perhaps your next-door neighbour,
Melanie, would do, though. Would it be possible for me to speak to
her?" "Sure. I'm
just leaving, and you look as if you've just about finished your meal, so
I'd be happy
to give you a lift."
Barely ten minutes later (Socorro was not a large town), Stacy's "friend" was knocking on Melanie's door. It was opened by a dumpy middle-aged woman who said: "Hello, Carol. And it's Stacy, isn't it? I didn't expect to see you back in Socorro, you having won all that money. Just about everyone in town watched you on that quiz show, you know." Stacy realised that she might be something of a local celebrity. No doubt a Socorro resident didn't often make headlines. Over a cup of coffee, she explained to Melanie (and Carol, who had invited herself in) that she wanted to track down her ex lab assistant. Melanie told her:
