A misunderstood civil servant of his (and Earth's) people...

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 68213

But where exactly? And where exactly is the G-Man going to say that the gateway entrance lay?

G-Man

Hm, where indeed? But before I should answer THAT, perhaps as an aside . . . certain issues should be addressed. See that some questions came up, so might as well take care of it here and NOW. While this won't be in the usual orderly format of the reports I submit for my superiors, it shall suffice.

Besides, since when were you in my chain of command, much less my superior? I see you get what I am trying to say here, surely.

Yes.

Indeed.

Now while I still believe that the map (or whatever this strange thing that I am using . . . odd thing) is accurate and in proper working order, I do have grounds to doubt the small (hidden) scanning device I had used to look ahead last time the gateway was used. Why this should have happened I could only speculate either it was due to a bit of chaos energy mucking up the works. Or perhaps the technology used in my equipment, while in theory useful for the teleportation network for Nin, is less than useful for our old allies transportation network!

The Iconians had always been ones for their own security above all else, even with close allies! While I'm all for that myself I do believe that in the end it played a part in their downfall. If they'd only trusted MY kind more we could have prevented such from happening.

And my race would not be in such dire straights today with the Combine, where such measures we had to take . . . had been taken. Some of which came back to haunt me while I was speaking to those Star Fleet representatives. If I had it my way, the meeting would have been either by video conferencing or by another of my race who's body had not been "gifted" with certain aspects like mine had been.

I cannot help but exude a low level air of menace about me, you see. Back early on when my kind had stumbled across Earth (my reality's Earth) we determined humanity was . . . wanting in certain ways. Honestly, if it hadn't been for the Combine casting interested glances her way (namely her natural resources), my kind would have just ignored Earth until it either grew more in maturity . . . .or until humanity blew itself up. So with that in mind, we . . . .opted on using a ploy. Using an urban legend already present in humanity's "urban legends" mythology and using it to our own ends and interests for diplomacy. Basically, we determined that creating bodies that give off low levels of psychic power to genreate unease in others would be useful in intimidating the "natives" into doing what we wanted and needed doing. Not the best strategy, but it worked . . . up until now.

The Star Trek people, being more socially advanced than their counterparts which I worked with, did not care for such things. They have dealt with such things (psychic emissions) even and didn't like it being done to them, even IF I cannot help myself. Worked really against me in the end to where I only got vague (open ended) promises for aid against the Combine.

. . .

Guess I was lucky to get that much from that bunch. As for the "contemporary" 21rst century humans I'd dealt with?

Mind you, I am not implying that there were no people upon 21rst century Earth ("my" Earth) worthy of respect and such, it was just there were too few of them. So fear worked for the majority of those I dealt with. That and quiet honestly as a military force (technology wise and such) in a straight out battle Earth would be . . . would have been conquered in only a matter of hours. I am honestly amazed that Earth managed seven hours in that video game Elrondir mentioned which reflects my home reality!

I had thought and planned for a guerrilla campaign after it had proven that one of the VERY facilities I and others of my kind had secretly been aiding (upping weapon's technology to something which would give Earth's soldiers a halfway decent chance against Combine military forces) had been compromised! The administrator himself, DoctorWallace Breen, had thrown in with the Combine! And while I could have easily have eliminated the traitor it would have done no good, only delay the planned invasion of Earth by Combine forces a short time and needlessly tip my hand to the enemy. In other words the die had already been cast and for the greater good (my kind's good at the very least . . . what with my race's numbers being FAR more in number than all of Earth's human population) a lot of innocent humans were going to have to die. The contingency plans and assets (like those presented in MY sponsoring Dr. Gordon Freeman's education and such) would have to come into play after things fell apart.

Even what actually were my good intentions with the young girl who calls herself now "Reika" lay cast down in doubt before my newest allies here! Granted, I myself admittedly am not a "humanitarian" by how human's define it. However, by MY race's standards I was being VERY kind in attempting to "kidnap" her from the situation with NERV. I fail to see how I do worse with her than what she'd gotten from that organization. Oh, I admit that she'll do better with an actual family (albeit a strange one), but that's besides the point!

Not like one could really expect such an odd cast of "heroes" to come and do what they did, can you? Go to the lengths that they did to stop what I saw as a hopeless outcome from taking place: the destruction of NERV and Tokyo-3?

Even IF Reika hadn't actually survived the destruction of Unit 00 (at least not in her original body), she still would have been worth the effort I made. Would have been a very fine new "employee". Much better than any others I saw within NERV, let me tell you.

But that . . . is water under the bridge. Will not go on to tell you how I feel about the death of the very best MEN I sent out to retrieve Reika nor the distrust I still see in the face because of those events.

This makes for a VERY annoying trip, I'm sure you understand what I mean by that!

Let us not go into how what I've seen in Reika's original psyche evals coupled with what I've seen thus far in not only HER behavior but also her "manga" sister: Lilith! Lilith, back when in her "Yui" incarnation--Gods, never thought I should be using such terms seriously outside of temple service--had been instrumental in getting Project E (the very heart and soul of the Evangelions, Instrumentality and all that business) started. Lilith back then may have been quiet the leader back then to inspire such, but now she's . . . more of a follower than a leader. Same for Reika, even though she's MUCH better than she had been before coming into her own.

I had worries about Rei because of that. Would she hesitate at a critical moment? Would she be able to LEAD effectively? THAT is one of the real reasons why I was so . . . annoyed with having her as a leader over me. But if I was to get what I need for my people, I had no choice.

I'd tried to negotiate to something more favorable in party setup, but . . .

Well, no need to "beat a dead horse" as the old saying goes. As it turns out I see that Rei here is a bit different than her younger sisters. Either through her particular transfiguration, her years of having been under the wings of her family, or maybe even lessons learned from Fred Takahashi seems to have molded her into an effective leader.

Most intriguing . But whatever the case . . .

Whatever the case I see that Elrondir hadn't been taking a poke at me

So, you see it all now, I am sure.

Yes, yes. I may not be the "knight in shining armor" hero from Earth fairy tales but then again I'm not exactly a VILLIAN, either. More an anti-hero by definition, if Earthly terms must be used. Almost insulting, but still if one is to be honest with one's self and apply human terms . . .

Whatever. I do what I must for the greater good. If I must be the misunderstood civil servant, then so be it. In the end I know what I stand for . . . even if the others here (even apparently Elrondir who seems to know so much about me) doesn't totally understand.

Odd, considering his background....

  1. But all this hardly answers Rei's question, now does it?
