A very serendipitous failure of the door's energy field? Or had Scotty -
having finished disabling the engines - perhaps turned his attention to
further sabotage? The forcefields of the cells in the brig would have been
a fairly obvious target for him, for he wasn't to know that those cells
were currently unoccupied apart from Fred. Fred had no idea whether Scotty
would have been able to disable the forcefields from where he was. As a
communications officer, she had had no need to learn that sort of
technical detail.
Whatever the cause of the malfunction, getting out of the brig as quickly and as stealthily as possible seemed like a very good idea. A warning would almost certainly be sounding or flashing on somebody's console, so she needed to hurry. She hoped that Connors wouldn't have thought it necessary to post a guard.
