Connors asked several more questions, growing increasingly agitated as
Fred refused to acknowledge that she knew anything about what was going
on. Finally, Connors exhaled in disgust. "I wish I didn't have to do
this, Nyota. It's obvious you won't co-operate - but you're bearing one
of the offspring, so I can't harm you. And since Chapel can't seem to
find a cure for you, you leave me no choice. Wexler, Sarls, escort the
Lieutenant here to the brig."
Without uttering a word, Ensigns Wexler and Sarls led Fred through the ship to the otherwise empty brig and unceremoniously shoved her into a cell. They activated the forcefield and, with a final sneer, simply left here there.
Fred paced back and forth in her cell. She was relieved she'd managed to help frustrate the parasites' plans, but she couldn't help wondering about her shipmates. Had Spock and McCoy found a way to neutralize these alien creatures? Where had Mr. Scott and the others taken the Captain? And what about the other women aboard? Martine LeClerc was free of these monsters, but there were still 125 aboard - including, she was painfully aware, one still growing inside her!
And where in the world were all the other men?
Finally, as Fred leaned back against the far wall, the door's energy field flickered and snapped off. Fred snapped to attention, ready for anything.
