Neither of the giantesses initially notices the symbol on the gryphon's
forehead, since his hair does a pretty good job of covering it. The hair
needs to be pushed aside to get a good view of it.
"He's cute," Hilda surprises herself by saying, as the gryphon rubs affectionately against her leg. "He is," Gilda agrees. "But where did he come from? And where did the wizard go? The last thing I can remember is his putting us to sleep, just after he put the collars on us." "Maybe he was called away by some emergency? Perhaps we should get out while the going's good?" "Yes, it wouldn't be wise to hang around to search for the item that our employer wants. If the wizard catches us I imagine that he'll complete what he started, and make us his familiars." When they leave, naturally the gryphon follows them. That puts the girls in a bit of a spot. The bond that has formed with the creature works both ways, and so they are reluctant to leave him behind. However they fear that the wizard will be furious if he thinks that they have stolen his pet. For what else can the gryphon be but the wizard's pet? (Not his familar, since they recall his saying that he didn't have one, and therefore the gryphon must be just an "ordinary" pet.)
