Up, Up and Away

Astra shrugged, having learnt that it was useless to try to get the old man to say more than he wished. "Very well, then," she said. She walked over to the pillar of light, with Carola following, took a deep breath and stepped in.

She felt herself being borne aloft, as if the cave roof did not exist, but all she could see was a brilliant whiteness surrounding her. After no more than thirty seconds, her motion slowed and stopped, and the brilliant light faded away.

When Qundarian had said "a dark place", he had evidently been speaking literally as well as figuratively, for wherever she was was almost - though not quite - pitch black. A faint red glow was coming from somewhere in the distance. Perhaps when her eyes had adjusted she would be able to use that, but for the time being she would have to rely on her other senses.

"Carola, are you there?" she asked.

1. "Yes, Astra," came the reply.
2. But there was no answer. Could something have gone wrong? Or had the old man tricked them?
