Stacy listened to the whole speech. It merely confirmed her fears: her
work could be used as a deadly weapon, and it was quite clear the the
government had every intention of so using it. Stacy had no trouble
understanding why she had turned this man's "offer" down, as it was the
same choice she was inclined to make now. "I'm sorry," she said, "but I've thought about it, and my decision still stands." "You're sure you won't change your mind?" The man's voice was mild, calm, but something about it bothered Stacy immensely. "I'm sure," she said, as firmly as she could manage. "That's very... unfortunate, Dr. Jones." This time the note of menace in Smith's voice was unmistakeable. "The sort of research you are doing can be very... dangerous." "I'm sorry," she repeated. "But that's my final word." And she slammed the telephone receiver down. She was a little surprised to find that her hand was shaking.
