The Never Ending Quest - Episode 6427

She picked up the phone and said, a little nervously: "Hello." "Hello, Doctor Jones. This is Robert Smith. I thought I'd make one final attempt to change your mind." Stacy put two and two together. This must be the professor that the man in the doughnut shop had mentioned. [6171] "Hello, Professor Smith," she said, and paused for a second to see whether the voice at the other end would query the salutation. When he didn't, she went on: "Perhaps you would run through your proposition one more time, as if you'd never spoken about it before, just so I can be sure I have everything clear. Maybe I'll change my mind."

Professor Smith did as she asked. He wanted her to:

Come and work with him at MIT. On the face of it, it sounded like an attractive offer, and she wondered why she had turned it down.
Give the DoD access to her research, about which he had somehow heard. Apparently he was a senior scientific advisor to the Pentagon.
Come and work for him at RAND, the non-profit defence research agency. He didn't mention her equations, but she suspected that he must have got wind of them somehow.
