All of the zombies seemed to have been burnt to ash by now, so that the
group faced no more opposition. As they ran down the avenue that led from
the gate to the central Tower, with Fred and Diana carrying the still
unconscious Exotica, they soon left the highly flammable wooden buildings
behind, and reached an area where the constructions were made of brick and
stone. Before long it was safe for them to slow to a walk.
The Tower was still some distance ahead of them, and adjacent to it they could see the great domed structure that might be either a temple or a palace. [64286] "Perhaps there is another gate on the far side of the city," Sara suggested. "We might get out that way." "I think that we should explore the Tower before we leave," Fred said. "The explanation for this strange city will surely be there." "Who cares about an explanation!" Sara said. "I just want to get out of this terrible place as quickly as possible. We know now that we will find no shelter or food or clothes here - at least, none that we would dare to use." Imelda and Sophia were still too shocked by what had occurred to contribute anything. Rather surprisingly, Diana too kept silent, perhaps uncertain of the best course of action. But then Exotica's eyes flickered open. "We must go to the temple," she said, apparently having heard their discussion. "If we perform the correct exorcism rite at the altar, we can cleanse this place of its evil." "How do you know?" Diana asked her. But Exotica's eyes had closed again, and she did not reply.
