When Fred saw how many animated corpses were closing in on them, he
thought that his little group was sure to be swiftly overwhelmed,
especially as only Diana, Sara and himself seemed likely to make any real
contribution to the defence. (Exotica was unconscious, and the remaining
two girls were too scared to be much use.) But it swiftly became apparent
that the zombies were as interested in battling each other as in attacking
the newcomers, which greatly slowed the speed of their advance. Watching
them fight amongst themselves, Fred realised that they were comparatively
weak and fragile too. As against that, they would be hard to stop, since
the loss of a limb was evidently no more than a minor inconvenience. Diana
had already fired several crossbow bolts at them, in at least one case the
bolt passing right through its target with no apparent effect. And some of
the zombies carried nasty weapons.
The imminent danger had cleared Fred's mind of the lust and rage that had been clouding it. Now - in the nick of time - he had an idea. He fumbled in his pack for his tinder box and the last of his torches. "These corpses should burn well," he told the others. He lit one torch and passed it to Diana, then a second and gave it to Sara. The third and last he kept for himself.
