Princess Sophia (or Sofia in the Allarian form, and sometimes called
Sophie by her friends) of Califie was the first to notice. Probably
because she was looking down. Sophia was a shy girl, and seemed to
lose herself in a crowd, especailly one with dominating personalities
like Fred and Diana. Her twin sister Helena had been the assertive one,
the one who had protected and looked out for her as best she could once
they had been captured by the dragon. Califie and Aqualaria were
poilitcal rivals, and Helena, along with the MalBonctonite Lady Sara, had
shielded her from the disdain that the amazons would sometimes display
towards them while in captivity. She felt very lost without her sister
there to help or comfort her, and was seeking to avoid notice.
What the girl noticed, at first, was a pale, wispy green mist gathering around her bare feet. It seemed to emanate from the ground itself. Fred and Diana didn't notice, they were too busy arguing over whether to leave or investigate further. Sara was busy tending to Exotica, who they had propped up against the inner wall near the city gate. Imelda, meanwhile, had turned away from the gruesome sight and was leaning against the wall with her eyes closed. She'd probably be vomiting if not for the fact that her stomach was empty. Sophia watched as the mist seemed to darken and began to permeate the entire corpse-strewn courtyard. She spoke up, trying to point out what was happening, but her her meek voice went unheard by her companions. Then, something happened. She saw one of the corpses move. Her mouth formed a wordless shriek that finally snapped Fred and Diana out of their own heated argument. Fred had been alternating between the dark thoughts of either killing Diana, taking her by force, or both. Diana had been having similar thoughts. They whirled and turned towards Sophia, who in turn pointed a trembling finger out towards the courtyard. They all turned to look. "Heliastra save us." whispered Diana. "What foul trickery is this?!" Fred spat, drawing his sword. The corpses, some of them missing limbs or even heads, had somehow, impossibly, risen and were stumbling out of a strange green mist towards the party. "Let's get out of here, now!" Sara exclaimed. But as they turned to go, some unknown force slammed the city gates shut, trapping them within.
