Though Astra had not had the opportunity to watch Hitchcock's The
Birds, without any armour or even clothes to protect her or a weapon
with which to defend herself, she did not fancy being mobbed by a gang of
crows. She knew that their beaks were capable of inflicting a nasty wound,
even to cause death. It was no coincidence that in her language, as in
English, the collective noun for the birds was "a murder". There weren't
even any rocks lying around with which she might stone the crows.
She wasted no time on arguing with the scarecrow but, undigified though it might be, sprinted back towards the tunnel entrance as fast as she could, hoping that the birds would be reluctant to follow her inside. Or would the other entrance be a better bet? [1447] She discounted seeking shelter in one of the huts. If they proved to be locked, then she would be caught in the open. And since it was after dark [1447], they probably were locked. As she ran, she wondered what sort of scarecow this was, that not only talked but which seemed to be in league with the birds that it was supposed to frighten off. Meanwhile the black cloud drew ever closer, clearly visible in the bright moonlight.
