Fred's dragon body was that of a fully-grown adult, true. However, since
he didn't arrive at that stage the normal way, he didn't have a typical
adult dragon's control. His lack of flying ability brought home the fact
that perhaps he should have been more detailed in what he had asked
Belboz. He had asked to be turned into a red dragon; that is exactly what
he got. He wasn't the first to make such a mistake, not that knowing that
would have made him feel any better. Well, flying didn't work, so how about using flame? Surely that would be simple enough? Again, Fred's lack of control was to play against him. A red dragon could vary the temperature of its flame, but this was something it had to learn from a young age. A young dragon's body would naturally try and produce the hottest flame possible. This produced a noticable delay, one that could ultimately be fatal. Fred's body, since it hadn't been conditioned to do otherwise, was trying to do the same thing. It was a good thing the other dragon was simply biding his time as, not surprisingly, Fred's attempt failed.
