Astra's Voice Returns

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 62366

Fred and Astra paced along the river eagerly, their thoughts dancing with hope at the possibility of food, a warm bed, and a sense of security. Although the temple's outer-wall appeared to not even be a mile away, it felt to them as though they were walking for hours. Upon nearing the wall, a sudden terrifying thought filled Fred's mind.

"Princess, the temple's wall is well over fifteen feet tall. In our excitement, we must have forgotten that there's a barrier between us and the temple. How do you propose we get over?" She simply gave him a blank look of dismay. Fred sighed. "Well, we might as well continue, now that we're this close. We haven't got any place better to go."

Soon, they finally came up to the edge of the wall. It stood around twenty-five feet tall and consisted of solid gray blocks of stone stack on top of one another. Carved into the stone were twisted symbols in a language which neither Fred nor Astra could understand. Despite the wall's size, it was dwarfed by the size of the temple it withheld.

"It doesn't look as though we'll be entering from here." said Fred a few minutes later. He'd hoped that perhaps a ladder or doorway might have been hidden against the wall, but he was left disappointed. Just then, Fred's stomach gave an enormous growl like a bear's roar. "We can worry about entering later. First, let's get something to eat." Astra nodded.

The sun was beginning to show signs of weariness by the time they returned to that very same spot by the wall and river. Fred had regretted not bringing the fallen elf's bow along with him [4230]; it would have made hunting a good deal easier. Even still, they're able to catch a good sized elk thanks to Astra. When they had spotted it in the far off distance, she tore the blade right out of Fred's hands and dashed off towards the elf like a cheetah rushing for the kill. The elk barely had time to glance before Astra stabbed the sword through its body. They brought back as much meat as they could, started a small fire, and roasted it. Even though it lacked the spices and herbs that Fred was used to, it was the most delicious elk he'd ever tasted in his life. He and Astra ate it until they grew sick. Finally, after gathering large wood leaves for blankets, they granted themselves some well-earned shuteye.

Fred awoke in utter panic. He could feel something rubbing against his shoulder. Instinctively, he lunged his left fist in the direction of the intruder and used his right hand to pull his sword out of it's sheathe, which caused a piercing screech. "Fred!" cried a familiar voice.

Fred jumped up and spun around. Although it was vainly dark, he recognized a shadowy figure in the clearing as Astra.

"Astra!" Fred said barely below a whisper. "You're voice is back!"

"I just realized that myself. That queen's spell must have worn off." she said. Her voice sounded faster and stronger than he'd remembered.

"Well…umm…what the heck were you doing anyways?"

"What was I doing? I was just shaking your shoulder to wake you up before you went into a rage. But we can fight about that later. Fred, I think I might have just figured out a solution to our problem. I had a dream-

Fred groaned. "Don't tell me in your dream, you found a secret passage halfway around the wall." Fred had heard about these "Helpful" dreams many times, and the most that anybody he knew had every got from them was a lighter moneybag, a new set of scars, and an early death.

"No, no, no, don't be ridiculous. It showed me nothing like that. The dream itself was rubbish; I was simply standing in this exact spot wearing a whore's dress, dancing on the river, who knows why. The point is, in it, I realized that the river is flowing through the wall.

At first, Fred was bewildered, then it hit him and his hopes began to rise. "I think I see what you're saying. So, where the river heads through the wall…"

"Is our entrance in." Astra finished. Even in pitch blackness, Fred could sense a smile for her. "Well, what are we waiting for? Let's go check it out!"

"Check it out…now? Hold on!" Fred said. He stepped forward and accidentally collided with Astra. When he felt her soft breast rub his arm, he grew hard. Fred apologized and continued. Princess, I know you excited, but even if the river does lead us through the wall, we'd be fools to enter in the middle of the night. They'd think we're thieves or assassins. Also, getting soaked in the water at this time of night could cause us to freeze to death…And besides, we need some bloody sleep.

If Astra's face could have darkened anymore, it had. However, all she said was "Fine." and then crawled back into her bed of leaves. Fred did the same. Fred did the same. The last thing he remembered before drifting off to sleep was how nice it was to hear Astra's voice again.

  1. Fred awoke to a familiar voice. "Fred, wake up. I was right. There IS a passage leading through the wall!"
  2. Fred awoke to the sound of a crackling fire. "That passage through the wall won't work." said Astra's voice bitterly before Fred could even open his eyes.
