Fred's Aversion to Swimming

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 62539

Astra continued: "The river flows out through an opening in the wall. I suppose it's useful for the monks, or whatever they are, to have their own water supply inside the wall. We'll have to swim through the opening against the current, but it can't be far and the current isn't very strong, so it should be straightforward."

"I'm not that keen on going swimming, after my earlier experience that brought me to this land. I wouldn't have thought that you would be, either. I think that first we should carry out a complete circumnavigation of the wall. There surely must be an entrance somewhere that people can use to go in and out. It's probably on the far side somewhere, where we can't see it. Only if we can't find it should we try your idea."

"I suppose that you're right. But we may still have to go swimming. Presumably at some point on the far side the river must enter through the wall, since it's flowing out on this side. If the entrance that you seek is beyond that point, then we'll need to cross the river to get to it."

"Let's hope that it isn't beyond that point, then."

After a breakfast of more elk meat, they began their circumnavigation, leaving the river behind them. The way that the wall curved meant that - close to it as they were - they could not see for very far round it.

Eventually:

  1. A gate came into view.
  2. They reached the point where the river entered the wall. "Shall we swim across and keep on searching for a gate, or would you rather swim in with the river?" Astra asked. "We'll have to swim, either way."
