The Never Ending Quest - Episode 62225

As for right now, that sallow faced suit (call him G-man for convenience, his real name is never given). . . had figured out that foreseen scenarios had failed to manifest. Point in fact, things were decidedly off kilter for him because of that. He could not even get in contact with his superiors for the moment and that was . . . worrisome. However, he knew that this change in plans did not mean to sit around and twiddle his thumbs, waiting for instructions. He sent out teams to investigate this unexpected world which was now connected to the Half-life Earth, and was surprised and amazed at what was discovered by what they reported back.

The G-man had seen a lot in his long career (which only a small portion of it included Earth), however this was something else. It was almost like something out of some kind of Japanese anime (which in reality this reality they'd found WAS reflected in a Japanese anime, but why be picky). Odd or not, it caught the G-man's attention and . . . he saw a potential windfall in favor for himself and his employee's cause. Seeing, however, that this NERV (and by extension SEELE) might not be too keen on . . .sharing the wealth for the greater good (i.e. the survival of the human race for ultimately both his and their Earths). Would take too long to convince them before their enemies (from that border word) see this opportunity and take advantage. So, in typical fashion of the G-man he took matters into his own hands and TOOK it without asking (and secretly). Pilfering computer files. Taking people and . . . seeing potential recruits in a LOT of NERV employees (as well as MUCH needed information sources for some of the more . . . esoteric, vague, and unbelievable tidbits stumbled across in this little foray). The recruits would be enticed by various means. The information sources would be . . . squeezed (as hard and as much) for information, by what ever means necessary (poor Gendo Akari . . . feels so sad for him right now. Feh).

Oh, but what about the Angels attacking this other Earth (the Neon Genesis Evangelion Earth), you ask? How exactly stealing key assets and personnel should be beneficial to BOTH if Third Impact should occur, wiping out all of humanity on at least ONE world?!

Relax, whatever else could be said about the G-man it cannot be said that he's stupid. His men and he himself, while looking and poking about NERV HQ while those who worked within had been displaced (some to the far city limits . . . some further) by the same dimensional warping that had connected the two realms together. While he'd not believed everything the computer files had said about Angels and such (surely they were actaully some alien species who had Weapons of Mass destruction deployment systems who were somehow keyed to certain DNA signatures), he'd known such a danger had been pushed back by quite a bit. He had to say that with both Lilith and Adam gone (Adam had burned a nice little hole through Gendo's office safe into the flooring beneath before he'd finished spontaneously combusting), the threat from THAT corner was neautralized. At least it was until these Angel aliens regrouped and tried some OTHER angle. Third Impact, the G-man knew, wasn't going to happen before he had made some . . .deals with SEELE (read BLACKMAIL) to get them to share.

Frankly, in the G-man's opinion the thread the Combine presented (a force who came from that border world reality) a much bigger threat to all. But all that said, that did not mean he had all the time in the world, so some quick and . . . perhaps questionable actions must be taken.

Recruiting and procurement.

One VERY interesting potential recruit happened to be Rei III (she reminded him of himself, being able to survive the longest odds) had caught his eye and the G-man wanted HER especially to work for him. Indeed, if someone had somehow survived relatively unscathed an explosion that had leveled Tokyo 3 he wanted them on HIS team!!

. . .

Yeah, the guy didn't know about Rei III being a clone and all that. That piece of information had been too buried and encrypted for recovery.

As for the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 and the Dawntreader? Their FTL drives had been shredded by bad interractoins between each other and weren't going anywhere fast too soon. Very damanged right now they both are as they orbit the Neon Genesis Evangelion Earth, still invisible to the sensors below. However, how long that should remain remains to be seen.

What is of more concern to the Enterprise is the rather unexpected (but welcome) call for an emergency beam out by one of their missing crewmembers: Dr. McCoy! He'd come up missing after all his other crewmates had managed to beam back there from the Mirror version of the Enterprise and had been . . . presumed dead. Though how he managed to end up down below on the planet below and speaking with the captain of that wrecked spaceship off their bow is a story and a half.

And who is this Gordon Freeman character and why does he keep muttering something about this all being too strange to be believable? Something about TV and anime characters shouldn't be running about in real life and some such.

Those two ships will come into play here soon enough.

Yeah, back to that "recruiting" crew after Rei III. The G-man himself had sent his best operatives to retrieve that young girl and things looked like they'd been going rather smoothly indeed. Section 2's agents were still reeling from the disruptions to their office and everything from NERV HQ (i.e. still disorganized like all get out with the chain of command all over the countryside and key communication systems DOWN). Things had gone well indeed, and the agents escorting/guarding her neutralized. But it turned out that Rei III wasn't exactly the most easily "escorted" person to handle.

As it turned out (and what her files failed to mention) was that she had been able to work up to a multi-degree blackbelt before her coming back as Rei III. Had quiet the kick, she had (much to the painful surprise of several of the G-man's agents). Being that the operatives were somewhat constrained on how to respond (couldn't just shoot her, that would be . . . counterproductive, killing her), it had slowed things down a bit. Not enough for Section 2 to get around to getting assets to stop them, but necessitate utilizing their backup plan: using the "displacement" weapon they had "borrowed" from the techs of Black Mesa. Risky, but time was running out here.

They had planned on driving themselves and Rei III to a nearby (stable) teleportation point and disappear from pursuit that way. This other way was risky because of two things: the weapon was still "experimental" (still had bugs that might prove to be . . . lethal) and the fact that all was still not known about these strange links to the Half-life Earth to this other Earth. Yes, the weapon had been created to be both able to "displace" either enemy targets or (with the flick of a switch) the weapon handler away from combat to some place FAR away. For the enemy target getting teleported, it took away their ability to harm the weapon handler (duh) IF they survived that weapon mode (that option did massive splash damage to the target and those around the area of "displacement". For the weapon handler getting transported, it took him and his (or her) group out of harms way. . . . if they were lucky. Where they may land was totally random. Might be even MORE dangerous than the place they'd just left.

The idea that something like dragons and a flying winged woman being able to fly up and kill the weapon handler for the displacement gun (and damaging the gun in the process) with lightning hadn't come into the picture. The swiftness and ferocity of the attack (and sleep spells) had never come into the picture.

The idea that the displacement weapon should still be operational enough to misfire, telporting Rei II and Rei III elsewhere definitely DID not come into anyone's picture. More on that here in a moment.

As for Rei III herself, interesting things had been going on with her! Having a visit from someone who is an analog/doppleganger is mind bending enough as it stood, but with the reintroduction of all the knowledge she had lost (regaining understanding of feelings . . .regaining her memories for having feelings for people other than prescribed by one Gendo Akari) was REALLY a watershed event for her. New horizons again opened for her. Some kind of hope and desire for things beyond what had been mapped for her by others.

No longer a doll or puppet, she'd been awhirl with trying to figure out just WHAT to do with herself and her future. That and just before the kidnappers snaring her she'd had a rather jarring thought. Disturbing thought. As what she'd realized before, as before her return she realized that she wished to be with (i.e. cared deeply for) "her" Shinji Akari, but the question of in WHAT capacity came to her mind. Lover? Sister? Maybe . . . even something motherly?

Though why she should feel that way she had still been trying to figure out.

When the kidnappers came, she'd given them hell, feeling that they were either going to take her life (and thus erasing all that she'd regained . . . .and she wasn't going to let THAT happen) . . . or kidnap her (to be used by others for whatever reason . . . something she'd grown RATHER tired of, being used). Either way, she wasn't going to let them have an easy time of it.

She'd blacked out (caught in the sleep spell cast by her sister), only to wake up seconds before crashing into first a naked version of herself and then . . . what she'd known as "mother Lilith".

The displacement weapon had teleported her and Rei II into yet another parallel Geon Genesis Evangelion reality (shere the last few scenes of Rebirth had been taking place) and pretty much throwing everything into chaos. The native Rei along with her twins got ALL sucked into the awaiting giant Angel known as Lilith. What this will mean in the short and long term shall remain to be seen, but in whatever the case the introduction of a Champion into the mix means a decidedly DIFFERENT change in the course of things.

  1. A disruption of almost everything, really, with the introduction of the Champion known as Rei III right now and a not quiet human man with a need to balance the scales.
