The judge played with the bat skull thoughtfully. He knew it was part of a
powerful gypsy curse. It played a strong part in convincing him that none
of the people he had interviewed had done it, even if several did have
motive. He was also a good judge of character - no pun intended. The knight had the means and the motive, even if it was a tenuous one. The judge was sure that the knight, especially as he was from Allaria, wouldn't resort to such tricks as scaring elderly men; they weren't honourable. When questioned about the skull, he genuinely had no clue as to its significance. Stara, or whatever her real name was, had motive perhaps. The means, well - she could have taken a knife from the kitchen or used the knight's sword. He certainly believed she could move around quietly enough, as she was an Aqualarian; perhaps of noble birth. Would she stoop to such things? He didn't think so. Also knew nothing about the skull. Ambaric was the magic-user whom the knight didn't think very highly of, though Stara liked him regardless of his inability to help her. Close friend to both Cedrics; no motive there. Came from an order incapable of harmful magics, so means was doubtful also. Had some idea about the skull. Cedric the Younger was the elder Cedric's closest friend, that much was obvious. The distress he felt at finding his friend dead were real enough; the judge had been around long enough to tell fake from reality. No means or motive. Knew nothing about the skull. Conclusion: Cedric the Elder had been the victim of a gypsy curse, scared to death by a nightmarish vision. The skull had been a portent. As he had travelled widely, the gypsy responsible wasn't necessarily in the Western Kingdoms. If they were, then they were guilty of murder. Other countries didn't necessarily see it as a crime, however. He left the room and told the four his verdict, and that they were now free to go. The judge meanwhile would do his utmost to fully solve the murder. He left the inn after telling the innkeeper he would make arrangements in dealing with the body.
