Lucieno met with no difficulty in catching Ambaric on his own and making the minor adjustments to his memory that were all that was necessary. Not long after that, the local judge - who also had the responsibility for investigating unsolved crimes - arrived. He carefully examined Cedric the Elder's body and the room where he had died, finding the bat skull. He then arranged for a room to be set aside for his use, and interviewed those who had been travelling with the victim one at a time, starting with Cedric the Younger, and continuing with Astra, Fred and Ambaric. He did not ask to interview Lucieno, who had not been travelling with the others and who, as far as he was aware, had no information that might help him.

  1. He came to the expected conclusion that Cedric the Elder had been the victim of a gypsy curse. He told the travellers that they were all free to go.
  2. He asked all of the travellers to remain at the inn whilst he investigated further. "It doesn't do to go jumping to the obvious conclusion," he said.
  3. Taking everyone, especially Lucieno, by surprise, he arrested Astra for Cedric the Elder's murder. She had had both motive and opportunity, plus she was an outsider. The bat skull might mean nothing or be an attempt at misdirection.
