The road narrowed slightly as it became the main thoroughfare of a
village. As their horse cantered between stucco two-storey buildings, the
pair noticed the complete absence of activity. They could hear nothing but
the wind in the trees that were planted at regular intervals along the
road. They approached the village centre, where they first heard, then saw a small stone fountain that consisted of four farm animals around a central pillar. At each of the cardinal points there was a small stone bench. Again, there was no-one in sight. It looked very much like the village was deserted. Astra felt they had to check this out. Fred reluctantly agreed. As they dismounted, Velus took the opportunity to investigate. Closer examination of their surroundings showed the buildings looked in remarkably good condition - in fact, they looked like they had just been built. A look through the windows showed the interiors they could see were immaculate, though also devoid of life. Velus started scrabbling at the door of one of the buildings and whining. Fred called him back and started scolding him just as the door started to open. The object of Velus' attention suddenly zoomed past them at a rapid pace with Velus in hot pursuit. "Greetings, travellers! Welcome to the former village of Quon Chen! Don't worry about the cat." Fred and Astra swirled round at the voice to find themselves confronted by a small man whose face was almost swamped by a beaming grin. "I am Kwan Sing Tung, self-styled village-keeper. Please, come inside." They follow Kwan inside to a large airy room where he gestured for them to sit on wooden chairs. Fred and Astra introduced themselves. "Again, welcome," Kwan said. "You may wonder what I meant by former village. As you no doubt saw, this village is devoid of life."
