Why Use Magic?

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 62013

The horse had been a little nervous, but Fred had managed to coax him across without too much difficulty. "I wonder why they went to all that trouble," Astra said. "Wouldn't a conventional bridge have been simpler?"

"Perhaps not, if their magic is advanced enough. Building a bridge across a river of any size is quite a big job. This might have been much quicker and cheaper."

"So why not leave the magic bridge in place permanently?" Astra wondered, looking back over her shoulder to where, now that they had crossed, the stones were automatically resetting themselves and the bridge was disappearing.

"I suppose they hope that they may be able to keep out some undesirables. Wild animals, perhaps, or maybe trolls or something like that, as I can't imagine so simple a puzzle keeping many humans from crossing. Or maybe there's some undesirable side effect from leaving it 'on' for too long?"

  1. They continued on.
  2. Fred was riding in front, and Astra was watching the surrounding countryside. So at first neither noticed that Astra's illusory dress [52008] had vanished. The bridge's primary purpose was to dispel any spells of illusion on those crossing it.
