Goodbye

The man behind the counter shrugged. "Got me, lady. Maybe you really should go to the police."

"Wait!" Stacy said. "I know this is going to be an imposition, but maybe I paid for my earlier bill with a check or something and it would say my last name. My reciept doesn't say what I used to pay with..."

"Hold on a moment." said the cashier. He tapped some buttons and the register slid open. He pulled out a stack of credit card slips and checks and flipped through them.

1. None of them said 'Stacy' anything.
2. There was a check with 'Stacy Jones' on it.
3. There was a credit card slip with 'Stacy Jones' on it. Stacy idly wondered why she had no corresponding slip but didn't want to mess with a good thing.
4. The clerk did find something with Stacy on it but insisted on talking to his manager first.
5. A cop came in and before Stacy could stop him, the clerk spilled the whole story.
