As Tetch and Bash kept vigilant watch over the camp, they saw a ragtag
group of would-be warriors approaching. Keeping themselves concealed, the
sentries eyed the incompetent band warily. The group was made up of three
creatures; two humans and a cat. The man was called Ted, and seemed to be
more or less in charge of the group, though he was certainly no less
incompetent than either of his companions. He appeared to be armed with a
smallish wooden sword. The female, Ashla, was ridiculously underdressed
and carried only a sharp twig with which to defend herself. The cat,
which seemed to be able to communicate with the other two by meowing and,
occasionally, scratching their ankles viciously, was called Pelus.
"Where are we now, Ted?" the female was heard to ask. The scrawny knight produced a scrap of paper and examined it closely. "According to my map," he said, "the dragon's lair is on the other side of this wall." He glanced to his left, then consulted the map again. "No wait," he mumbled, rotating the map this way and that, "it must be below us." He sounded almost completely certain. "Yes, the dragon is definitely either directly beneath this floor, or..." he turned the map once more, "...or 47 miles to the north. I can't be sure." "Well," Ashla put in, "perhaps we should attempt to tunnel through the floor." "Yes," agreed Ted. "Pelus, help us dig." And with that he began striking the ground with his wooden sword, attempting to carve his way through the dusty rock. The woman and feline also worked diligently for a short time, but Ashla soon stopped to rest and Pelus decided to take a catnap. Bash and Tetch watched this spectacle with contempt. "They are too stupid to be any threat to the camp," mused Tetch as he combed his ears petulantly. "True," agreed Bash, "but they are also too stupid to be allowed to live." Bash, who suffered from extreme emotional dysfunction due to having been named Hubert by his parents, whom he slaughtered brutally in his early childhood, notched an arrow.
