Fred looked up in the direction of the voice. Standing on the next branch
up, with perfect balance in spite of its narrowness, was a tall beautiful
woman with long black hair, who was dressed all in white. He saw that she
had pointed ears. This must be one of the fey! He had never met one
before, though he had heard many stories about them.
"The woman is our prisoner," she continued. "Do not interfere." "Why is she your prisoner?" Fred asked. "What did she do?" "She walked into one of our rings, thereby desecrating it." "How was I supposed to know?" Astra asked angrily. "It was just a circle of mushrooms. Anyway, it was almost dark and I didn't even notice it until I was already inside it." "Silence!" The fey woman gestured and, though Astra's lips continued to move no further sound emerged. "Ignorance is no excuse," she added. "What have you done to her?" Fred demanded. "She should not have interrupted me when I was speaking. The Queen of the Fey deserves respect, especially from mere mortals. So I have enforced her silence. She will not be able to utter another sound until I choose to remove my spell." "Then you had better do that now, sorceress!" "You grow tiresome, sir knight. I think it would be better if you too were to remain silent." She repeated the same gesture, this time facing Fred as she did so.
