Astra snuck a glance at Lucieno's direction. Getting his attention, she
gave him a querying look. Lucieno gave a small, almost imperceptible shake
of his head. The elderly man had been of no significance, not worth the
expenditure of Lucieno's energies. Even if he had been the sort to do that
sort of thing, which he wasn't. While Fred, and soon Astra, attempted to
console the now-weeping Cedric the Younger, the mage made his way into the
elder Cedric's room. There the man was, as Cedric the Younger been
overheard to say, face frozen with fear. This was an unsettling development in something that up to now had seemed to be going with no major complications. Had his plan been somehow been found out before he had even implemented it? That seemed impossible. Until he let Fred and Astra know his intentions, only he was aware of it. What of Ambaric? He had dismissed him as a nothing, as someone who couldn't even cast a simple spell properly. Had he fallen into the classic trap of dismissing someone as simple, when in fact they were anything but? Had Ambaric somehow discerned their true motives and this was a delaying tactic of some kind? He could be clutching at straws for all he knew, but being so close to the target country lent itself to paranoia. He mentally shook his head firmly. No. He was certain Ambaric would have rung warning bells if there had been anything odd about him. If not Ambaric, then who? None of the other people they have met could be brought into consideration. That left some unknown power. He was certain it was no one in the Western Kingdoms. He would surely detect them otherwise. In fact the Three Kingdoms would make more sense as any large sources of power would be masked. He felt suddenly weighed down.
