A Mysterious Death

Cedric the Younger - or now the only - looked at him in surprise, no doubt wondering what he was doing in Astra's room. "I don't know," he replied. "I knocked on the door of his room, which is next to mine, to see if he was ready to go down to breakfast. He's normally an early riser, so I was surprised when he didn't answer my knock. I knocked again, louder, and when there was still no answer tried the door. It wasn't locked. When I entered the room, he was lying in bed, dead. There was no mark on him, but his eyes were wide open and he had a look of terror on his face, as though he had seen something awful. I think that he was frightened to death."

Astra had an uncomfortable thought. Could Lucieno have been aware of the man's unhealthy interest in her, and have dealt with it in his own way? She hoped not. She was quite capable of looking after herself and, more importantly, the punishment was disproportionate to the offence.

1. Having heard Cedric's raised voice, Fred and Lucieno came out of Fred's room to investigate. Fred introduced Lucieno to Cedric and Ambaric as an old friend whom he had run into again by chance.
