Ordinarily Lucieno would not have investigated Cedric's death any further
once he had dismissed as highly unlikely the possibility that it could
have been linked in
some way to his own plans, but would have left that to the authorities.
Though it was very sad, it wasn't as though he was a friend of the victim.
But he realised that those authorities would certainly want to interview
all of Cedric the Elder's travelling companions before they would be
allowed to go on their way. At best, that would cause a delay before Fred
and Astra could leave, possibly amounting to days or even weeks if they
were required as witnesses at the inquest and/or a subsequent trial. At
worst, Astra - in particular - was at risk of being viewed as a suspect,
both because of the exotic appearance that marked her as an outsider and
because she might be thought to have a motive for the crime in view of
Cedric's prurient interest in her. So it would be best if he could
discover who or what had killed Cedric before the authorities arrived, and
present them with proof that his solution was correct.
He cast a spell to ensure that no-one would detect him in Cedric's room, thinking that the risk of such a local and short-lived spell being detected was acceptably low. Then he searched the room and the dead man's possessions in the hope of finding a clue.
