Ambaric had been on his way to see Astra to apologise to her yet again.
The door to Fred's room was slightly ajar, and passing it Ambaric heard an
unfamiliar voice say: "...after you've kidnapped the philosopher. What
Ambaric did could come in handy."
He could not catch Fred's muttered reply, but then the stranger went on: "Still, look on the bright side. You'll be rid of him soon." Was that a threat? It sounded rather like one to Ambaric. Who was this man, whom Fred appeared to know? Ambaric knew that he could use magic to defend himself if necessary (though of course he was unaware that he was facing another magic user, and a far more powerful one than himself at that). But he was not permitted to use any offensive spells. Surely, having agreed to be his escort, Fred wouldn't let himself be party to any plot against him, even if he was angry with him over what had happened to Astra? Yet it seemed that Fred was happy to be involved with some kidnap plot, which was hardly the sort of conduct to be expected from an Allarian knight. And talking of the kidnap plot, shouldn't he try to stop it? How could he manage that, though? He didn't even know who the intended victim was. Was Astra in on the plot as well? And what did the stranger mean when he said that what he (Ambaric) had done could come in handy?
