Naturally enough, the two Cedrics gave Astra many curious looks, but they
were too polite to ask her why she was attired so oddly. For her part, she
had given them the same story that she had used for the guard captain back
at the border post. The last thing that she wanted was for anyone to put
two and two together from her true name, her height and her hair colour,
and to realise her true identity. She couldn't do anything about the
latter two qualities, but at least she could disguise her name.
Ambaric knew her true name, of course - it wouldn't have been wise to try to deceive a sorceror, even as mild-mannered a one as Ambaric. She didn't know if he had worked out who she really was. He had asked her no awkward questions about herself, which might mean that he had no inkling that she was more than she seemed (but surely he must have wondered why she was travelling under an assumed name?), or alternatively that he was already convinced that he knew who she really was. Even if the latter was the case, she thought that she could trust him to be discreet. She wondered whether Fred had been wise to give his true name to the guard captain to help them get across the border. Given that they were engaged on a kidnapping mission, the fewer the tracks that they left behind them the better.
