In view of her recent unpleasant experience, Nixy was excused watchkeeping
duties; everyone felt that she needed to get a full night's sleep. The
remaining four would take two hour watches each, as nearly as they could
estimate the time. Fred drew the shortest straw and so took the first
watch. Then Velus, Astra and Cedrik would take their watches, in that
order.
Fred's watch passed without incident. He kept the fire going. The lie of the land meant that the flames could not be seen from any great distance, so the warmth that it provided, especially given that everyone apart from himself was wearing little or no clothing, outweighed the risk. Eventually he judged that it was about time for him to wake Velus. When he did so, and Velus sat up, there was enough light from the fire for Fred to see that:
