At first Fred thought Velus was only a bit pale in the face, but then he
saw that his skin had taken on a definately gritty texture. "Velus! What has happened to you?" he exclaimed. "Fhwa?" Velus mumbled. Then his eyes popped open and his hands shot to his face. "Fhwa! Fhwa!" It was clear that he couldn't move his mouth enough to pronounce proper words. He scratched at his lips and face, producing a screeching sound with his nails that put Fred's teeth on edge. Fred hurried to wake the rest of the group and see if Astra and Cedrik had been affected as well.
