The trapdoor was made of iron and thus had not been destroyed in the fire.
It was still to hot to open with your bare hands so they found a stick that
would be strong enough to stick through the handle of the trapdoor and used
to pull it open, but the trapdoor wouldn't budge. They banged on the
trapdoor and shouted for Nixy, but there was no answer. "Perhaps the heat was to strong even down there," Velus said. "Maybe she's fainted or worse?" They had no way of knowing unless they could get the hatch open. But how?
