"But Nixy could be dying down there, when if we could get to her we might save her," Velus said. "I don't want to wait. If the four of us could manage to lift one of the smaller of the trolls, and then drop it on the trapdoor, mightn't that break it open?"

"It might, though the trapdoor is designed to open upwards and - being made of iron - must be very strong," Cederik said. "And what if Nixy is right beneath it? If the troll did by any chance go straight through then she would be squashed."

"Unlikely," Astra put in. "Since the further from the trapdoor the cooler it would be."

They eventually decided to:

1. Wait a while and see if the trapdoor would open then.
2. Try Velus's idea.
3. Before they could make up their minds, the trapdoor began to rise. It was being forced open from below.
