The trolls had been reduced to charred and inert rocks, but there was no sign of Nixy. What could have happened to her? Surely, however fierce the fire, there should at least have been some of her bones remaining? Indeed, to prove that point they did find some bones, but they were clearly not human. They must be all that remained of animals that the trolls had killed for food.

They were sure than Nixy could not have left the building without being seen. So what was the explanation? The best theory that anyone come up with was Cederik's. "If they left her unattended in a locked room, then perhaps there was a hidden trapdoor in the floor that the trolls were unaware of? Maybe she found it and took refuge down in the cellars without them being any the wiser? It would probably have remained reasonably cool down there, and she might be all right."

  1. A thorough search revealed a trapdoor. Cederik's theory had seemingly been right. It was closed, Nixy presumably having shut it behind her, either to keep out the fire or to hide it from the trolls.
  2. But they could find no sign of any trapdoor. "Surely an inn ought to have a cellar," Astra said.
