Andrea approached the lake, wanting to see what it was that was causing
the splashing. The
lake was long but narrow, and thus had a bridge to carry the road across
the
middle in order to avoid a lengthy detour. The bridge was made of wood and
supported on
piles, since the lake was only about twelve feet deep in this region.
As Andrea drew near to the edge of the lake, she realised that the splashing was caused by a swimmer in difficulties, some thirty yards out from the bank. The swimmer was:
